I have a somewhat conservative view on what I believe to be the role of the federal government. I believe that our nation is best governed by a federal government that is limited in its size, scope and power, with most authority left to the states, or to the people. Any belief that the size, scope or power of the federal government should be expanded, contradictory to the Constitution, is not a acceptable.
Members of both major political parties have quite pronounced views on social issues – they even happen to share some of the same views. But I think it unfortunate that social/moral issues have become the standard for what people look to in political leadership and governance. I think that adherence to this standard has resulted in the loss of many millions of votes, and has set Constitutional governance back by decades.
I believe that if we were to appeal to voters on purely POLITICAL ideas, instead of telling people they have to change their minds, or choose a side on social issues, we would have many more voters. We fail when we tell people they have to agree with us on social issues to vote for our candidates, and yet we do it all the time – and end up driving voters away.
